HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format. It is a container format that can hold images and related information. HEIF describes how content is stored; the image compression codec inside the container can vary. HEIC is a common HEIF variant using HEVC.
A .heif extension alone does not guarantee that every file can be decoded by this tool. Supported images become still, 8-bit sRGB JXL files, and unsupported content produces an error.
JXL is the file extension for JPEG XL, an image format designed for efficient image compression. JPEG XL supports lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency, making it suitable for both photographs and graphics.
This HEIF to JXL converter creates still, 8-bit sRGB images. Choose high quality to balance detail and file size, or lossless to preserve the decoded pixels. File-size savings are not guaranteed, and JPEG XL support varies between browsers and image applications. Keep your original HEIF files for compatibility.
Convert HEIF photos to still JPEG XL images. Decoding depends on the contents of the HEIF container; unsupported files show an error.
Choose your HEIF files, select a quality setting, then convert and download. Each image must be no larger than 20 MB and 16 megapixels.
Create compressed JXL files from your images using adjustable quality or lossless mode. This converter accepts source formats such as JPG and PNG; it does not currently accept existing JXL files for recompression.
